The present Department of Immigration and Passports started its activities in 1982 with the zonal office, in Dhaka and Regional Passport Offices in Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet, Rajshahi, and Khulna as a directorate to assist Bangladeshi nationals in traveling abroad. The Department of Immigration and Passports was fully established in 1973 in post-independence independent sovereign Bangladesh. Located in Dhaka. 2010 saw a revolutionary change in the Department of Immigration and Passports. The issuance of Machine Readable Passports (MRP) and Machine Readable Visas (MRV) started in compliance with the guidelines of the International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO). With the establishment of 19 regional passport offices, the number of offices is 34 (thirty-four). Besides, 6 visa cells and 9 immigration checkposts were created.
